This was a real issue for me, too. I work in an office that is almost every day awash in free food in the kitchen. Party leftovers, the rest of a big bag of chips, today's cherry pie (plus a lone mystery doughnut)...there is food in the kitchen about every other day.

We live in a society where those who don’t need free food get plenty of it and there’ s not enough for those who do. Don’t believe me? Look at how many samples are out at the Whole Foods. If you an afford to pay Whole Foods prices, you can afford to buy your own cheese cube.

I thought that was a very insightful comment, and absolutely true. Another example is all the noontime lunches and talks and conferences on campus. Lots of them have free food, too, and if I wanted to, I guess I could pose as an academic and sort of blend in...in a way I probably could not when I was a convenience store worker.

When I was in college, I took free food very seriously.

When Grinnell College hosts speakers, they usually put out cookies and coffee, and they don't always get eaten at the event, so I organized th "Cookie Liberation Front."

You see, when you free the cookies, you get...free cookies.
